Please. 'Important' subjects not 'hard' subjects...

In the West Australian newspaper an article on published on 19 May it’s discouraging to (again) read about the continued decline in our Year 12 students taking the ‘important’ subjects, particularly when we know most future jobs are predominantly STEM focused.

Granted that there are other pathways to university however that’s no guarantee that these potentially, academically-able Year 12’s will choose or redirect to a STEM degree, especially when you take into account the catch up time required and loss of momentum while they catch up. Even if they did pull through and completed a STEM degree they’ve lost valuable time, particularly in this fast changing world.

One thing that might help our kids engage at an early age is to stop referring the science and math subjects as ‘hard’ subjects but rather as ‘important’ subjects. Keep being informed and inspired.
